Are you looking for real ways to make money from home? Perfect — because I’m going to show you exactly how to do that.
Ever since I became a stay-at-home mom, I’ve become the queen of side hustles. Back when I was working my corporate job and dreaming of financial freedom, I wanted to figure out what I could do on the side to make that dream happen.
Instead of randomly Googling “how to make money online” (and ending up with a bunch of scammy offers), I started talking to real people making real money from home. I asked them:
- What do you do?
- How did you get started?
- How much do you earn?
The answers I got changed everything.
Today, I’m going to share those insights with you, along with my own experiences, and walk you through 17 powerful side hustles that you can do from home. Many of these can earn you $1,000+ per month or even become full-blown businesses over time.
And here’s the kicker — when you run a home-based business, the IRS sees you as a small business owner, which opens the door to tons of tax benefits. Your phone, internet, even certain travel expenses — all potential write-offs!
I learned this from Lynn Richardson, who completely transformed the way I think about money and taxes. (I’ll link to her affordable course in the description — it’s under $50 and a total game-changer.)
Now let’s dive in.
1. Start a Blog
Blogging changed my life.
My first year blogging, I made around $1,000. The next year? I made so much more. Not only does blogging itself earn income (via ads, affiliate links, digital products), but the skills you learn — like SEO, website design, and Pinterest marketing — can also be monetized.
For example:
- I now charge $1,000 per website I build.
- I offer Pinterest management services to small businesses.
- I do SEO audits to help other bloggers rank on Google.
2. Sell on Amazon via FBA
With Amazon’s FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) program, you can:
- Find discounted products at stores or online,
- List them on Amazon at a markup,
- Ship them to Amazon,
- And they handle the rest.
My sister does this on the side and earns over $2,000/month — with a full-time job.
Start by checking out Jessica from The Selling Family — she built a six-figure Amazon reselling business working part-time and has a free email course to help you begin.
3. Flip Items on eBay
Go to local thrift stores, flea markets, or garage sales with just $20–$50. Look for underpriced items, then resell them on eBay for 2x or 3x profit.
Rob from Flea Market Flipper turned this into a full-time business, and he offers a free workshop showing exactly how to get started.
4. Grocery Delivery Shopper
If you want to make money on your own schedule, companies like:
- Instacart
- Shipt
- Postmates
…let you either shop for groceries or shop + deliver them.
Many shoppers earn decent money + tips. I regularly use these services (especially during pregnancy!), and I always tip well. Check out my article on the best grocery delivery driver jobs hiring now.
5. Social Media Manager
Love Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook? You can make money helping small businesses build their social media presence.
Tip: Start by managing a friend’s business account for free. Use the results as a case study to get paying clients.
You can earn $1,000–$10,000/month, depending on your clients and workload.
6. Become a Virtual Assistant (VA)
Virtual assistants help businesses with:
- Admin tasks
- Email management
- Research
- Scheduling
- Customer service
- Social media
You can charge $25–$100/hour. I interviewed Jeana C., a six-figure VA, and she’s offering her $99 course completely free for now — take advantage of that while you can.
7. Bookkeeping from Home
You don’t need a finance degree to become a bookkeeper. If you’re detail-oriented and good with numbers, this is a great option.
Two stay-at-home moms I interviewed earn $2,000+/month doing this — one has 9 kids and still homeschools six of them!
They got started through Ben’s Bookkeeping Launch Course, which includes a free introductory class.
8. Proofreading
If spelling errors and bad grammar make you cringe, this one’s for you.
Caitlin Pyle earned $43,000 in a year proofreading part-time while studying abroad! You can earn $1,000–$4,000/month catching mistakes.
9. Online Tutoring
If you’re strong in a particular subject, you can tutor students online — including teaching English to kids in China.
Some platforms pay up to $60/hour. Moms I interviewed make up to $3,000/month, working just a few hours per day.
Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree (any subject)
- One year of teaching experience (formal or informal)
- U.S. or Canada residency
10. Transcription Work
Transcriptionists listen to audio files and type what they hear. If you’re a fast, accurate typist and can sit for long periods, this might be for you.
Companies hiring now include:
- Rev
- TranscribeMe
- GoTranscript
Most beginners earn $0.30–$1.00 per audio minute, which adds up over time.
11. Create Printables on Etsy
You can make digital printables (like planners, kids’ activities, calendars) and sell them over and over again on Etsy.
It’s mostly passive income once your designs are up.
Julie, one of my interviewees, makes $500–$1,000/month with her Etsy shop.
12. Search Engine Evaluator
Yes, companies like Google and Facebook hire real people to rate search results and ad relevance.
Jobs are flexible and pay around $12–$14/hour. Companies like Appen and Lionbridge are currently hiring.
13. Freelance Writer
If you enjoy writing, this is one of the best-paying side hustles.
Holly Johnson makes over $200,000/year as a freelance writer — and she started from scratch. She now offers a free workshop to help others do the same.
Check out the article I wrote about her journey and how to get started.
14. Property Preservation Contractor
This one’s unique. Banks don’t want to own foreclosed homes, so they hire contractors to maintain those properties.
You don’t renovate — you simply maintain: mow lawns, winterize pipes, clean interiors.
Danielle Pierce, a mom I met, makes over $400,000/year doing this part-time!
15. Pet Sitting or Dog Walking
Love animals? Apps like Rover or Wag let you earn money by caring for pets.
Great for flexible income, especially if you’re already home during the day.
16. Childcare From Home
If you already stay home with your kids, consider opening a small daycare for a few more.
Even watching just 2–3 kids can bring in $1,500–$3,000/month, depending on your area.
17. Affiliate Marketing
You don’t need a blog or YouTube channel to start affiliate marketing — though they help. Share products you love and get paid for referrals.
Focus on:
- Amazon Associates
- ShareASale
- Impact
- RewardStyle
Final Thoughts
Side hustles aren’t just a way to make extra cash — they’re a path to freedom.
Whether you’re trying to leave your job, save for a vacation, or just afford a little breathing room each month, there’s something on this list for everyone.
Start small. Be consistent. Learn as you go.
And don’t forget: if you’re running a business from home — even a small one — look into those tax write-offs. They can be life-changing.
