Being a mom is already a full-time job. The responsibilities are never-ending—nurturing, feeding, cleaning, teaching, comforting, managing a household. But what happens when you also need to earn an income? What if you want to contribute financially without sacrificing your time with your children?
This was the exact dilemma I faced when I was four months pregnant with my second child. The thought of returning to the corporate world after maternity leave filled me with dread. I didn’t care about climbing the corporate ladder anymore. My heart was at home. However, my husband and I were living on a two-income budget. Simply quitting wasn’t an option unless I found a way to supplement my income.
That’s when I turned to the internet. I prayed for direction and searched relentlessly for stay-at-home opportunities. I eventually decided to reach out directly to moms who were already working from home. I asked them: What do you do? How do you do it with kids? How can I start? And how much do you make?
Their honesty and generosity were life-changing. I compiled their stories, advice, and tips into a website designed to help moms like me find legitimate work-from-home jobs. I launched that site in January 2018. My daughter was born in March 2018. I took an extended maternity leave to test if this business model could actually sustain us. It did. I wasn’t making a fortune—just $5,000 in my first year—but I saw potential.
With faith and determination, I went all in. I gave my two weeks’ notice and pursued the business full-time. The following year, my business brought in over $200,000. Yes, from $5K to $200K in one year. That was nobody but God.
Before making that leap, my husband and I had decided early in my pregnancy that our goal was for me to quit. So we started living on just his paycheck and saved mine as a safety net. We trimmed down our lifestyle, practiced discipline, and prepared for the unknown. And it paid off.
Today, I want to help other moms explore that same freedom. I’ve even created a free Facebook group called Unbound: More Than Just a Mom—a space for like-minded moms who are ready to build something of their own. Whether you already have a business or are just thinking about starting one, this group is for you. We’ll collaborate, connect, support one another, and discover new ways to earn. I’ll be going live weekly and bringing in special guests to share insights on diversifying income, running a business, and achieving freedom.
But first, let me share with you some of the best stay-at-home jobs for moms—roles that can be molded around your schedule and still bring in a solid income. Some of these may require a bit of training, and I know not everyone can afford to pay for a course upfront. But remember, just like college is an investment in future income, the right training can open doors to meaningful work-from-home opportunities. Here’s the list:
1. Virtual Assistant
This was my first step into the online work world. Virtual assistants (VAs) offer remote support to businesses, handling tasks like scheduling appointments, managing emails, social media, customer service, research, and more. The best part is flexibility. You work when it suits your schedule, as long as you meet deadlines.
I hired two VAs who are moms, and I don’t care when they get the work done—just that it’s done well. Starting pay is typically around $20–$25 per hour. That’s what I earned from my first VA gig.
You don’t need to know everything upfront—just be resourceful. If you don’t know something, learn it. There are countless free resources on YouTube and Google. You can also offer services to friends or small local businesses to gain experience.
If you’re interested, I highly recommend checking out Michaela Quinn. She was a teacher-turned-VA who eventually replaced her teaching salary and now helps other moms do the same. She offers a free workshop to get started.
2. Telus International
If you’re looking for a more structured job, consider becoming a US Rater with Telus. It pays $14/hour for about 20 hours of work each week—on your schedule. You’ll evaluate data from search engines and rate search results for relevance and accuracy.
It’s not a high-paying job, but it’s a steady source of income and doesn’t require much experience. A great stepping stone if you’re easing into remote work.
3. Bookkeeping
Bookkeeping is one of my top recommendations, especially if you’re looking for high pay with minimal time commitment. Bookkeepers manage and record a business’s financial transactions—typically just a few hours of work per client per month. And one client can pay you around $500 per month.
I interviewed a mom of nine kids who works as a bookkeeper and earns over $2,000 a month on her own terms. She took a course to get started, and now she’s thriving. If you’re curious whether bookkeeping is right for you, start with the free workshop her course offers.
4. Proofreading
Do you naturally catch typos and grammar mistakes? You might thrive as a proofreader. I interviewed a mom who makes $3,500 a month catching errors on her own schedule. Like many other success stories, she began with a proofreading course that gave her the confidence and skills to land clients.
There’s a free intro workshop you can take to see if this path suits you. It’s a great gig if you love detail-oriented work and want to work quietly on your own time.
5. Sleep Consultant
If you’re the mom who managed to get your baby sleeping through the night early on (bless you), other moms need your help. You could become a sleep consultant, just like Jaime Havens, who turned her talent into a business and now makes $10,000/month.
She started out helping friends, then expanded to paying clients. Eventually, she built a program to teach others how to do the same. I interviewed her, and if you’re curious about this path, that interview is packed with insights.
6. Selling Printables on Etsy
Printables are digital downloads like planners, checklists, and party games. You make them once and sell them over and over again. Moms are earning up to $8,000/month doing this.
Julie, for example, designs printables on Canva and sells them on Etsy. She also created a course to help others do the same—Gold City Ventures—and has offered a special discount code for those who want to get started. Even if you’re not a designer, you can tweak templates and find a niche (like weddings, holidays, or party games) to make money passively.
7. Blogging
Yes—I blog for a living. And you can too. Blogging is about solving problems and answering questions people are already searching for on Google. I write articles that rank high in search results and earn money through ads and affiliate marketing.
Once you understand what your audience is searching for, you can create content that brings them to your site—day after day, month after month. I teach my full strategy in a step-by-step course that breaks down how to build a six-figure blog from scratch.
A Final Word
If none of these roles speak to you, don’t worry. There are countless ways to make money from home. What matters most is finding something that works for you—your schedule, your interests, your strengths.
And if you’re still not sure where to begin, join my new Facebook group: Unbound: More Than Just a Mom. It’s a space for dreamers, builders, and doers. Moms who are ready to create something bigger than themselves. In this group, you’ll find guidance, community, and the tools you need to make money—even if you’re starting from scratch.
Whether you want to blog, freelance, sell digital products, or start a service-based business, we’re going to do it together.
